Sci-Fi Science Camps back in Meadow Lake

Kids with a budding interest in science or those who just like to try something new will want to check out this fun science camp coming to Meadow Lake next week.

The Sci-Fi Science Camps day camp, offered through the University of Saskatchewan, will be held at Jubilee Community School from July 24 to 28.

The camp hasn’t been held in Meadow Lake since before the pandemic, so head instructor Erin Fedusiak is excited to see it offered again.

“It’s a week full of different science experiments and projects, and just a lot of fun,” she said. “We have lots of projects they can take home. For the little kids’ camp, one of the [initiatives] we do is [create] an extinction lantern, based on what they are learning about dinosaurs.”

For the older kids’ camps, participants mix some different chemicals together to make a little bag of fun sticky slime on one of the days that they will get to take home after.

“Kids love it; parents may not be as thrilled,” Fedusiak said with a laugh.

Kids at the camp also learn about building bridges, chemicals, plants, ecology and planets, for example.

The camp has 40 spots for kids in total, one group for school-age children going into Grades 1 to 3, and a second for older kids heading into Grades 4 to 6.

“There will be lots of fun science experiments and projects, but just a little different based on their [the participants’] ages,” Fedusiak said.

“We still have a few extra spots…It’s looking to be a fun week.”

People can register online through the University of Saskatchewan Sci-Fi Science Camps website.
