Police arrest two suspects in a canoe after gunshots reported

Members of the Meadow Lake Crime Reduction Team and the Beauval RCMP made two arrests and are seeking a third suspect after an attempted traffic stop turned into a flight from police on the water.

On Aug. 17 around 2 p.m. Beauval RCMP received a report of a firearm discharge on Highway 155, north of the community. Police determined three individuals travelling in a vehicle shot a firearm at an unoccupied vehicle parked on the side of the road. No injuries were reported.

Members from Beauval, Ile a la Cross, La Loche and Meadow Lake RCMP units, including Police Dog Services, attended the scene and began searching for suspects. The suspect vehicle was located, but fled when police attempted a traffic stop.

Officers later noticed two people run from a forested area, board a canoe and paddling Canoe Lake. Police then secured a boat and travelled to the suspects. They arrested a woman and man on the water. When arresting the woman, police found roughly eight grams of cocaine in her possession.

Marissa McCallum, 24, was charged with two counts of resisting arrest/obstruction of a police officer, and failing to comply with a probation order. She was also charged with weapons possession contrary to order.

Kelsey Iron, 29, was charged with one count of assault, and failure to comply with probation.

A warrant was issued for Zachary Montgrand, 22, who is charged with flight from a peace officer and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. Meadow Lake RCMP CRT members are working to locate him. He is also wanted on additional warrants for offences including assault and break and enter.

Montgrand is described as 5-9 tall and 240 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. Police suspect he may be in Cole Bay, but cannot confirm that fact.
