A building in Meadow Lake and two in La Ronge are among a small list of Saskatchewan properties getting recognized for the work done to be more environmentally friendly.

A total of 12 buildings recently received a BOMA BEST (Building Environmental Standards) Certificate. This included the Provincial Court House in Meadow Lake as well as Mistasinihk Place and the Government of Canada Building in La Ronge.

According to SaskBuilds and Procurement Minister Joe Hargrave, they were recognized for the work done to make the buildings more energy and water-efficient.

“Anytime we do a renovation we’re trying to look for the best way, the most environmentally friendly way, to make those changes and to make those buildings one of the best it can be,” he said.

Hargrave added he understands 12 isn’t a big number, however, this is a new record for the province. He credits the Prairie Resilience Climate Strategy for the increase.

Each also received one of the highest-graded certificates that can be handed out. The platinum level is the most prestigious certificate BOMA BEST hands out, followed by gold, silver, bronze, and baseline.

One of Saskatchewan’s buildings received a platinum certificate, Roy Romanow Provincial Laboratory in Regina, while 10 others received gold including the buildings in Meadow Lake and La Ronge.

Only three communities had multiple buildings recognized: Regina, Saskatoon, and La Ronge.

“La Ronge is not a major city, it’s a decent-sized community but to have two in the top 12… I’m pretty happy about that,” said Hargrave.

Moving forward, Hargrave is confident more buildings will be recognized while the ones that have already received a certificate will improve their level.
