Volleyball regionals, conference championships taking place this weekend

It will be a busy weekend on the court for many high school volleyball teams in the province, including some who are close to home.

The Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association’s (SHSAA) 1-5A Girl’s Regional volleyball championships are taking place this weekend along with the 1-3A Boy’s Conference volleyball championships. Additionally, the 5A Boys Regional tournament will also be taking place this weekend with the northern teams playing in Prince Albert and the southern in Swift Current.

In Prince Albert, the 5A Boys tournament will be happening at St. Mary High School with five teams in the mix: P.A. St. Mary, P.A. Carlton, Lloydminster, Warman, and North Battleford. The top three teams in the tournament will advance to the 5A Provincial tournament which is set to be played in Swift Current on Nov. 18-19. The teams in the 5A Girls Regional tournament are the same as the boys with the top three teams also advancing to the 5A Provincial tournament, which is set to be held on Nov. 17-18 at St. Mary High School in Prince Albert.

In the Girls 1A Regionals, six local schools will battle for bragging rights, including Annaheim, Hepburn, Debden, Bellevue, Choiceland, and the host Allan. In another 1A tournament, schools from Edam, Loon Lake, Kerrobert, Medstead, and Hillmond will travel to Maymont to compete for regional glory.

One of the local 2A Girls’ tournaments will be hosted in Carrot River, with Wakaw, Wadena, Rosthern, St. Brieux, and Saskatoon Christian School also competing. On the West side of the province also in 2A, Langham, Turtleford, Makwa, Paradise Hill, and Pierceland schools will meet in Macklin for their Regional tournament. It’s noted that the top two teams from either 2A tournament will advance to provincials.

In the 3A category for the girls, Shellbrook’s W.P. Sandin school will be the host for the regional tournament, welcoming Waldheim, Creighton, Stobart, Nisto, and Osler’s Valley Christian Academy. The top three teams will move on to provincials.

Three communities in the province will be hosting girls 4A regionals, including two that are competing with local teams. Melville will welcome Nipawin, Tisdale, Melfort, Humboldt, and Yorkton’s Sacred Heart School, while Martensville will play host to Meadow Lake, Sakāskohc (Onion Lake), La Ronge (Churchill High School), La Loche, and North Battlefords John Paul II. The top three teams in either tournament will advance to provincials.

The 1-4A Girls Provincial Championships are scheduled to happen Nov. 17-18 with draws being announced on Monday.

In the boys 1A Conference championships, Choiceland will host Annaheim and Bellevue, Goodsoil hosts Pelican Lake and Waweyekisik (Waterhen Lake), and Leoville will welcome Glaslyn, Edam, and Medstead.

The 2A boys features a plethora of tournaments, including Hepburn, Ile-a-la-Crosse, Kinistino, Turtleford, and Wilkie each hosting in their respective areas. Hepburn will welcome Little Red, Meath Park, and Mistawasis; Ile-a-la-Crosse hosts Canoe Lake, Chief Napew (Pierceland), Buffalo River, and Buffalo Narrows; Kinistino welcomes Sturgeon Lake, Hudson Bay, and Birch Hills; Turtleford plays host to Paradise Hill, St. Walburg, Makwa, Piyesiw Awasis (Thunderchild First Nation), and Island Lake; and Wilkie welcomes Lashburn, Neilburg, Luseland, and Chief Poundmaker.

Finally in the 3A boys conference championships, nine different host locations were selected with a few being played locally, including in Biggar, Rosthern, Spiritwood, and Prince Albert. Biggar plays host to Unity and Kindersley; Rosthern Junior College welcomes Dalmeny, Waldheim, and Osler Valley Christian Academy; Spiritwood hosts Maidstone, Minahik (Pinehouse), and Chief John Keenatch (Big River); PACI (Prince Albert) welcomes Stanley Mission and Senator Myles Venne (Air Ronge).

Draws for the 1-4A Boys Regional Championships will happen on Monday while the draws for the 1-4A Boys Provincial Championships will be announced on Nov. 20. Provincial weekend for the 1-4A Boys is scheduled to take place on Nov. 25-26.
