Cowboy Christmas Parade riding its way through Meadow Lake December 20

Dec 6, 2023 | 9:53 AM

This Christmas, a parade with an equine twist will be wishing snowy happy trails to all in Meadow Lake.

On December 20, a special treat will grace the community – on horseback – and according to May Gorst, one of the organizers of the Cowboy Christmas Parade, it’s a way to bring people together and give them a smile.

“Christmas is all about joy and stuff and let the kids enjoy the lights or the horses,” she said.

The parade, which at this point will include a couple of wagons and about 15 riders, will gather in the field across from the Home Hardware before travelling along the West Service Road near Highway 4, though a start time has yet to be decided. The idea was originally thought of in 2020 as a way to bring cheer to the local seniors, but due to the pandemic, was unable to proceed with planning. When an acquaintance who works at a local senior’s centre reached out to Gorst, she thought now was the time. By last Thursday, plans were in the air.

“I thought, ‘Why can’t we try to do something in the winter and start from there?’ And just through something out on Facebook, on Messenger,” she said, noting the goal was to get other equestrians interested.

“It’s just to bring joy to the seniors and everybody else who wants to come and watch,” she said.

“Children love parades,” Gorst added of the horse-centric event with plenty of waving to the crowd.

“We’re going to hopefully try and keep distance, or people will hopefully stay in their vehicles,” Gorst added, noting participants were welcome to decorate their mounts and wagons.
