SSFA 55+ Games Curling wraps up with many winners

Mar 7, 2024 | 11:00 AM

It’s a wrap!

Around 70 participants from across Saskatchewan descended on the Northland Power Curling Centre in North Battleford from March 4 to 6 to take part in the Saskatchewan Senior Fitness Association (SSFA) 55+ Games curling competition, hosted by the Twin Rivers Curling Club.

SSFA vice-president and host committee chair Al Gabert said the competition was a success.

“I think things went really well,” he said, adding that among the 70 curlers, 32 of them were from the Battlefords area, which was good to see. “We ended up with a number of our teams winning gold and going on to Nationals if they choose. Overall, we felt that it was very successful and we got a lot of positive comments back from the competitors from all over the province so that was good.”

Gabert noted that Team Verhoeven’s men’s team, Team Scheible’s men’s team, and possibly a 75+ Team are expected to go on to the Canada 55+ Games for the national competitions.

He added that gold winners are offered the opportunity to go to Nationals, and if they choose not to go the silver winners are then invited to participate.

“They are trying to fill the field of competitors from the province,” Gabert said.

Along with the participants, many of their families came with them to the Games in the Battlefords, so there was a good turnout at the event.

Doug Fehr, chair of the human resources committee for the event, said there was a good response on having the Games in the Battlefords.

“All the comments we received were very, very positive,” he said. “That’s a feather in the Battlefords hat.”

The Games was also a boon for local tourism with many athletes competing in the event.

“About half the participants were local,” Fehr said. “But for the other 35-ish participants, the majority would have been hoteling it.”

People attended the Games from across Saskatchewan, including the Battlefords, Regina, the Davidson area, Saskatoon, Kamsack, and Christopher Lake, to name a few.
