The U of S Huskies and Carleton Ravens put on an amazing show in the gold medal game of the USports women’s basketball championships at the Saville Sports Community Centre in Edmonton on Sunday night.

Carleton pulled out a 70-67 win for a second consecutive championship and third in program history.

The score was close throughout the 40-minute contest. Saskatchewan opened a four-point lead in an impressive 21-point third quarter.

Third-year guard, Gage Grassick of Prince Albert, hit a big 3-point shot with 27 seconds remaining in the quarter to give Saskatchewan a 58-54 advantage. Grassick finished the night with 30 points and 12 rebounds.

The Ravens leaned on their experience in the final 10 minutes of the game, outscoring the Huskies 16-9 in the final quarter. The Huskies were up by four with 6:23 to go when Carleton went on a big 9-0 run.

Fourth-year guard, Kali Pocrnic, capped off the Raven’s surge by hitting a big turn-around jump shot following a Tatyanna Burke steal with 1:40 left to go to put the Ravens ahead 68-63. Saskatchewan pulled to within 3 on an Ella Murphy Wiebe layup with 16 seconds on the clock, but the Ravens successfully closed out the game.

Pocrnic, a fourth-year guard from Oakville, led the Ravens with 18 points, while Burke had 14. Carleton coach Dani Sinclair has now won three national championships, two as a head coach, and one as a player with Victoria in 2003.

Fifth-year forward Carly Ahlstrom played her last game as a Huskie. The Calgary product had 13 points and 5 rebounds in the championship game, following an incredible 27-point outing in Saskatchewan’s 64-57 semi-final win over Laval on Saturday night.

The Rouge et Or defeated Queens 76-62 in the USports bronze medal game on Sunday afternoon in Edmonton
