A Smile Cookie has indeed brought smiles to youngsters in the Living Sky School Division after raising funds for the latest project from the Living Sky Innovation Fund Communication Board Project.

This time around, the IF team set their sights on augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) boards and is in partnership with the speech and language department to help students find their voice while having fun with friends on the playground.

According to a press release, coffee enthusiasts at the Tim Hortons in Meadow Lake and the Battlefords raised $21,771.65 from April 29 to May 5 with 100 per cent going directly to the ACC boards, which each cost a few thousand dollars.

“Many students have difficulty verbally communicating for a variety of reasons, so they need other ways to talk. Communication is a human right, and these boards provide a way to communicate along with also promoting play and inclusion for everyone” said Shari Dueck, LSKY speech and language pathologist in the release.

BattlefordsNOW has reached out to the owners of the local Tim’s for comment and is waiting for a response.

According to the release, the team will look to have six installed by the time students come through the doors next fall.

“We are so incredibly grateful to our local Tim Hortons owners for partnering with us to support the Living Sky Innovation Fund, and more specifically the Communication Board Project. This fundraiser definitely exceeded our initial thoughts of what we could accomplish,” said Christeena Fisher, co-ordinator for the Living Sky Innovation Fund in the release.

“Thank you again to our local Tim Hortons locations, to our amazing speech and language team, to all the volunteers that helped during the week, and for the overwhelming generosity shown by all.”
