MN-S celebrates sod turning ceremony in Beauval

It was a big day for representatives with Métis Nation-Saskatchewan (MN-S) as they came together for a sod-turning ceremony in Beauval.

Several dignitaries, including MN-S President Glen McCallum, were in attendance for the event to mark the construction of a new Métis community hub known as Ma Faamii, which means ‘my family’ in Michif.

With a contractor anticipated to be selected this fall and completion slated for 2026, Ma Faamii will be a culturally- safe space designed to connect Métis citizens with a wide range of social, economic, and mental support services.

In specific, MN–S staff will assist citizens by supporting needs assessments, information and referrals, system navigation, registry intake, and documentation assistance.

“Ma Faamii is about our family and why we chose that name is because we try to work with different departments in our government, but more so in the communities where we are working so they understand they have access to certain programs like health, education, housing, childcare and more,” McCallum said.

“Those are the reasons why we build those in regions in kind of a central place, especially in Northern Saskatchewan, where Beauval is somewhat of the hub for the surrounding Métis communities that are there.”

Ma Faamii staff will help individuals and families access the right supports they need from all government departments, institutions, and community partner agencies. McCallum noted the centre will assist in building relationships with First Nations and non-Indigenous partners.

There are already centres operational in Prince Albert and Saskatoon.

“The Métis Nation needs to promote and be able to work with the region and be able to work with the local presidents and be able to work with program developers and deliverers and to be able to have a place where they don’t have to wait for head office to tell them what is going on, but be able to have the area director and the local president have their regional meetings and educate people for what is available to them and, at the same time, having a centre like Ma Faammi would be very helpful in regards to having something on the ground and having Northern Region 3 and the North have access to that facility and the programs we deliver.”
