Ferland says his ‘ultimate goal’ is leading the Riders to the Grey Cup

The deal with the University of Saskatchewan wasn’t the only one the Saskatchewan Roughriders sealed this week — offensive lineman Logan Ferland was extended for the next two seasons.

Ferland met with the media in Saskatoon on Tuesday and was grateful for the opportunity to sign the extension.

“When I initially signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, it was definitely a pinch myself moment,” Ferland said. “Soon after realizing junior football was nowhere to fall back on – that was the next goal – to grow as a leader on the football team and eventually lead this team to Grey Cup and that’s the ultimate goal.”

Ferland was grateful to all the coaches and teammates who have helped get him to where he is today.

Ferland is originally from Melfort and has become a fan favourite in the province, even participating in a literacy program for school children.

Throughout his football career, he’s climbed the ranks of the high school level and played five seasons with the Regina Thunder of the Canadian Junior Football League before landing with the Riders in 2021.

He also particularly thanked his mother and brother for helping push him and make sacrifices to get him to this point in his career.

“My brother’s the one that convinced me even to play football. I was forced into it by him and extremely grateful for that and the sacrifices he made,” Ferland said. “Just supporting me throughout my football career, through junior, always helping me out just to help me further my career.”

“My mom, I just can’t say enough. Extremely grateful for all the sacrifices that she’s made and things we went through as a family and what that’s kind of brought us to and how it’s come full circle since that moment as well,” Ferland added.

He hopes to continue to carry on the name of great offensive linemen who’ve played in the CFL and are from Saskatchewan.

“I knew what I signed up for when I played for this province. I saw guys like Dan Clark, like Brendon LaBatte, the guys that are from this province and I saw how special it was to them. Now I can carry on that tradition from those Sask. boys that really led the way,” Ferland explained.
