Hot weather forecasted over the next several days

Residents in Central and Northern Saskatchewan can expect a stretch of hot weather over the coming days.

“We have an upper ridge building in Alberta, so they are kind of getting hot now,” said Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Crawford Luke.

“Basically, that’s going to translate eastward …to include Saskatchewan. It’s going to be a hot, dry air mass that’s moving in for the next few days.”

The temperature is forecasted to hover around 30 C from Thursday to Sunday in communities including La Ronge, Melfort, Meadow Lake, North Battleford and Prince Albert. Luke noted there is a high chance those areas will be hit with a heat warning starting on Wednesday evening.

“It looks like there will be a bit of a drop in temperature next week,” he explained.

“It doesn’t look like it is going to get too cold at least at this point. It will probably remain in the mid-20s, but maybe not quite 30 C like we are expecting over the next few days. As far as rain is concerned, there is a thunderstorm northeast of La Ronge right now by Stanley Mission and there is another one over by Pelican Narrows, but those are pretty isolated in nature. I’m not sure if there’s going to be a whole lot of rain for many areas today from those.”

The next chance of rain will be on Monday, but Luke doesn’t expect any weather systems to bring any substantial precipitation.

As for the air quality warning in place in several communities, Luke doesn’t believe they will be lifted anytime soon as there are still 56 wildfires burning throughout Saskatchewan.

“I don’t know if a change in wind direction is really going to help the situation,” he said.

“It’s going to be pretty hot and dry the next few days, so I don’t really expect the smoke situation to improve.”
