Seeking answers after 50 years: RCMP look for tips in disappearance of Hudson Bay teen

Aug 1, 2025 | 9:17 AM

Hoping for a break in a 50-year-old case stemming from Hudson Bay.

Irene Scherban, who was 16 years old at the time, was last seen in the early morning hours of Aug. 2, 1975, outside her family’s home in Hudson Bay, and her whereabouts remain unknown.

The Saskatchewan RCMP Historical Case Unit (HCU) continues to investigate her disappearance and the subsequent information received. RCMP believe that her disappearance is suspicious in nature.

HCU Investigator Cpl. Tanya Gordon said in an RCMP news release that they have not forgotten the case and are committed to seeking the truth in the case.

“We will continue to investigate Irene’s disappearance with the hope of uncovering answers and providing her family with the closure they deserve,” Gordon said.

Despite the death of Irene’s mother in 2022, the remainder of the family continues to honour Irene’s memory.

Irene’s niece, Briane Jennifer Webb, was born two months after her disappearance, and said the family wants to know what happened.

“It has been 50 years since Irene disappeared, and our family is still waiting for answers. Our Baba passed away two years ago, still holding on to the hope that her daughter would come home,” Briane said.

“Now, we will lay a marker that reads, ‘May she find peace here between the parents who never gave up hope of her return.’ We place it not because we have closure, but because we carry that love and longing forward. After all these years, we still believe someone out there knows something. If you do, please come forward — so Irene’s story can finally be complete, and our family can find the peace we’ve been searching for.”

Anyone with information about the disappearance of Irene Scherban can contact 310-RCMP (7267), or via Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online here.
