Cool Treats, Warm Hearts: Miracle Treat Day returns Aug. 14 to support children in hospital

There’s a good reason to indulge in a sweet treat later this week.

Dairy Queen’s 23rd annual Miracle Treat Day takes place on Thursday, Aug. 14. During Miracle Treat Day, net proceeds made from Blizzard sales will support the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation (JPCHF). The foundation supports children and mothers-to-be by funding medical research and treatments, as well as child-focused healing environments.

Since it started, Dairy Queen has managed to raise $55 million for the Children’s Miracle Network in Canada over the course of the Miracle Treat Day events.

“It’s really a win-win fundraiser,” said Jada Kook, community engagement manager of Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation. “When you go out on Thursday and buy a Blizzard, 100 per cent of net proceeds from every Blizzard sold in Saskatchewan stays in Saskatchewan going to the Children’s Hospital Foundation, helping kids stay close to home to get the care they need.”

Last year, $249,000 was raised by Dairy Queen locations in Saskatchewan alone. Kook said the funding was used for specialized pediatric and maternal equipment, innovative research and vital programming.

The fundraiser has become an important tradition for franchisees like Robbie Alcayde who is the assistant manager of Dairy Queen’s North Battleford location. He said supporting sick children has become part of the fabric of the organization.

“This is very important for Dairy Queen because this is our tradition for helping kids with Jim Pattison,” Alcayde added. “I would like to encourage everyone, if there’s a chance to come here on Thursday and buy a Blizzard, it will be help for the Jim Pattison Foundation because all of our sales will go to the Jim Pattison Foundation.”

“Go out, get a Blizzard, rain or shine, or get your workplace to go out and bring it in for a pick-me-up mid afternoon,” Kook added.

Dairy Queen is also accepting donations along with the purchase of a Blizzard for JPCHF.
