Day five of the 2025 Canada Summer Games brought a mix of triumph and heart for Team Saskatchewan, as athletes competed across ten sports in St. John’s. While some sports saw rest or postponement due to weather and wildfire conditions, others delivered dramatic finishes, record-breaking performances, and promising momentum heading into the latter half of the games.

Prince Albert swimmer Ali Diehl made waves in the pool with a standout performance during prelims in the Women’s 100m Breaststroke Multi-Class Para (SB4-9, 11-14), setting a new Canada Games record with a time of 1:23.21. The team also saw multiple strong B final finishes, continuing a solid campaign in the pool.

The men’s basketball team silenced the loud Newfoundland crowd with an 86-82 win over the hosts in an exciting Wednesday night matchup.

Meanwhile, the women’s basketball squad capped off their round robin with a victory over Manitoba to top Pool C, securing a quarterfinal berth against Team BC on Thursday morning.

It took extra innings and a clutch finish, but Saskatchewan’s men’s baseball team edged Quebec 8-7 in a walk-off thriller to advance to the semifinals. The team will enjoy a well-earned rest day Thursday before returning to the diamond Friday.

The men’s rugby sevens team delivered a dramatic walkoff try to defeat Newfoundland 12-7, earning a 5th place finish overall.

The women’s team wrapped up their campaign with a win to claim 7th place.

Team Sask’s softball squad fell 6-12 to Quebec in a challenging game.

Saskatchewan’s women’s box lacrosse team ended their tournament with a 10-1 quarterfinal loss to powerhouse Ontario.

In cycling (road), riders battled scorching conditions in Wednesday’s road races, with temperatures climbing near 30°C. Regina’s Isaac McMurray led the men with a 13th-place finish in the 117.5km race.

On the women’s side, Lydia Stack-Michasiw rode with the lead pack throughout the 85.4km race, making for a strong finish.

Canoe and kayaking had some very impressive performances with top finishes for the province being:

  • Eve Wilson, 4th in K-1 1000m

Saskatchewan’s tennis squad cruised past Team NT with a 6-1 victory, setting up a Thursday showdown with Alberta.

Following another postponement due to wildfire concerns, organizers worked closely with authorities to resume beach volleyball matches under restricted conditions, without spectators. While Saskatchewan was not in action Wednesday, competition is tentatively set to resume Thursday.

After two consecutive weather-related delays, sailing is slated to resume Thursday as well, pending conditions.

Team Sask’s men’s soccer team had a rest day Wednesday and is expected to return to action Thursday.
