On Monday, Conservative party Leader Pierre Poilievre regained a seat in the House of Commons after winning a by-election in the Battle River-Crowfoot constituency. The election was called after previous incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) Damien Kurek stepped down to give Poilievre a chance to run in his place.

Poilievre won the by-election in a landslide, getting 40,548 votes for 80.4 per cent of the vote. Independent candidate Bonnie Critchley came in a distant second place with 5,013 votes for 9.9 per cent of the vote, Darcy Spady of the Liberal party received 2,174 votes for third place, and NDP candidate Katherine Swampy came in fourth place with 1,050 votes. None of the other record-high 214 candidates received more than a thousand votes.

Rosemarie Falk, MP for Battlefords-Lloydminster-Meadow Lake, gave a statement to battlefordsNOW where she expressed her congratulations to the Conservative party leader on his victory.

“Congratulations to Pierre Poilievre on this win in Battle River-Crowfoot. A big thank you to Damien and Danielle Kurek for their service to the constituents of Battle River-Crowfoot of whom will continue to be represented well.”

Falk continued, “Our Conservative team believes in Canada, we will not give up, we will work together, and we will continue to fight to restore the Canadian promise. The promise and legacy that our grandparents left for us so that we could leave that for our grandchildren. A country where hard work is rewarded, and dreams can be achieved. A country that is strong, self-reliant and sovereign. Conservatives are united, will continue to persevere and work together to restore the Canadian promise.”

The House of Commons will resume on Sept. 15. Now that Poilievre has regained a seat, he will return as Leader of the Official Opposition for the first time since he lost his seat representing the Carlton constituency in the 2025 Federal Election. He held his previous seat since 2004.
