One game in to the regular season and the Melfort Mustangs have made a trade.

The team acquired ‘06 defenceman Ryder Ellis from the La Ronge Ice Wolves in exchange for ‘06 defenceman Noah Aldred, a 2nd round pick, and a player development fee (PDF)

Aldred had come to the Mustangs from the U18 AAA Notre Dame Hounds, where he put up 12 points (7G-5A) last season.

Ellis is a 19-year-old originally from Meadow Lake. The 6’6″, 190 lb defenceman spent time in the Western Hockey League with the Lethbridge Hurricanes and the Moose Jaw Warriors.

The trade comes following the regular season debut of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League which saw all 12 teams in action on Friday night.

A few historic moments also took place with the opening of the regular season: 1,345 fans came out to cheer on the newest team in the league – the Warman Wolverines. In La Ronge, the Ice Wolves settled into their new home rink at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre, with the Flin Flon Bombers in town.

According to the SJHL website, across the league, seven of 11 home openers drew over 1,000 fans, contributing to a league-wide attendance average of 1,080 fans per game—with Nipawin’s home opener still to come Sept. 26.

“The passion and support from our communities, both in the rinks and online, show just how strong the SJHL brand is,” said Kyle McIntyre, Commissioner of the SJHL. “We’re thrilled with the momentum from opening weekend and look forward to building on this energy all season long.”

On the SJHL schedule for Tuesday, Sept. 23, the Mustangs travel to La Ronge, Weyburn is at Humboldt, and Warman heads to the Battlefords.
