‘What we need is hope’: NDP Leader Carla Beck addresses delegates at party convention

Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck has the highest post-election leadership review in party history.

The NDP convention at TCU Place in Saskatoon this weekend brought in over 600 delegates, the largest number the party has seen in nearly two decades.

Beck received an A grade from delegates, with 87 per cent approval.

She made her address on Saturday morning stating she is ready to “hit the ground running” to make a change if the NDP forms government.

“We’ve got less than three years to do it, so we’re going to get started,” Beck said, noting she has already started to put together a transition plan to form a government after the next election.

“We are not messing around.”

Beck said she wants to make it easier for people to access family doctors and to ensure no one has to pay out of pocket or travel out of province for health care.

She said she wants her government to work with health-care workers, not against them, and emphasized the need to direct more tax dollars towards public services.

“We won’t have to put up billboards to tell people how good they have it, because when we form government, people are going to feel it in their own lives,” Beck said.

But Beck said there is still more work to do ahead of the next provincial election in three years, which saw the NDP double its seats and sweep almost all Saskatoon and Regina ridings.

“We can do this, but we can’t do it alone,” she told delegates.

“We’re going to rely on each and every one of you to dig in, to do the work, along with like minded people right across this province, to knock on doors, to raise the money, to make those connections.”

Beck said the NDP party has “never ever been afraid of a little hard work” and wants to see change for future generations in sectors like housing and education.

“What we need is hope,” Beck said.
