SaskPower plans new 55-megawatt gas plant to replace aging Meadow Lake power station

SaskPower is moving ahead with plans to replace its aging power station near Meadow Lake with a new 55-megawatt natural gas facility.

The Crown corporation announced Wednesday that the proposed plant would use reciprocating internal combustion engine (RICE) technology — a design it said will allow for quicker construction and flexible, on-demand power generation.

“This approach will allow us to construct the facility in less time, and enable it to provide flexible, dispatchable power whenever it is needed,” said Rupen Pandya, SaskPower President and CEO.

SaskPower said it has secured two potential land options near the current 41-megawatt station and will begin field assessments and engagement with landowners, Indigenous rights holders and other stakeholders before choosing a final site.

Since specialized equipment takes time to manufacture, the utility plans to start procurement while the studies and consultations are underway.

Jeremy Harrison, the minister responsible for SaskPower, said public feedback will help shape the next steps.

“Feedback from the public and stakeholders will help to inform the path forward for this project, which if approved, would fortify the power system and support future economic growth in Northwest Saskatchewan for years to come,” he noted.

The existing plant, which has reached the end of its operational life, will remain in use until the new facility comes online, possibly as early as the end of 2029.
