Riders’ Ajou Ajou ready if needed for 112th Grey Cup

Saskatchewan Roughriders’ wide receivers are used to going up in the air and coming down with a spectacular catch.

But ahead of the 112th Grey Cup, it’s the status of a couple that remains up in the air.

Despite being out during the beginning portion of Wednesday’s practice, wide receiver KeeSean Johnson left the session and was listed as a non-participant. On Thursday, he wasn’t present during any portion of the session.

“Attacking treatment to give us our best chance. We will see what that looks like for us. Hopefully, it is something that we can turn to but he’s going to need just a little bit more treatment for him to get out there and do what he wants to do at the speed he wants to do it,” Riders head coach Corey Mace said. “Like we said all year with the receiving core, if it doesn’t come down to that, tons of guys we have faith in but you can’t ignore what KeeSean can bring to our team.”

There was some good news for the group as wide receiver Joe Robustelli was able to come out and practice after leaving the CFL West Final with a head injury.

Mace confirmed Robustelli had to go through the concussion protocol.

“He went through all the testing and all that stuff but he is out there and good to go,” Mace said.

One player who could have his number called in this situation is Ajou Ajou. The second-year CFL receiver has been running with the first team in the two practices ahead of the game.

“Our room is so deep, it’s one man down, next man up. We have ballers in this room. Even if I was down, I’m sure the next guy would hoop just like us. I’m just trying to be great where my feet are and help the team,” Ajou said.

He said it would mean everything to get a chance to play in the Grey Cup.

“We work our whole lives for this and now it’s here. We just have to seize the moment,” Ajou said.

It would also be special because on the opposite sidelines, his cousin Lwal Uguak will suit up for the Montreal Alouettes.

“It’s going to be awesome, it’s going to be amazing. He is definitely going to have some words for me and it’s just crazy because we were just talking about this a couple of weeks ago,” Ajou said. “It’s honestly insane that it’s here now and we just have to make the most of it.”

Kickoff for the 112th Grey Cup is set for 5 p.m. on Sunday at Princess Auto Stadium in Winnipeg.
