Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau looking for new club after leaving Portland

PORTLAND — The Portland Timbers made it official Friday, confirming Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau will not be back next season.

In its end-of-season roster release, the MLS side announced it had exercised the 2026 contract option on fellow Canadian ‘keeper James Pantemis. Veteran Canadian defender Kamal Miller was already under contract for next season.

Portland included Crepeau in its list of players no longer under contract.

The 31-year-old from Candiac, Que., had signalled his time in Portland was done in a social media post four days earlier. “Thank you Portland, on to the next chapter,” he wrote.

Crepeau will be looking for a club that will play him, with the 2026 World Cup looming. He is currently with 28th-ranked Canada during the November international window, with coach Jesse Marsch saying he will start Tuesday’s game against No. 50 Venezuela in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Crepeau is battling Minnesota United’s Dayne St. Clair, the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, for Canada’s starting job, St. Clair was in goal for Canada’s scoreless draw against No. 23 Ecuador in Toronto on Thursday, recording his 10th career shutout.

Crepeau has won 28 caps for Canada with nine clean sheets but missed out on the 2022 World Cup after breaking his leg playing for Los Angeles FC in the MLS Cup final.

Crepeau started 15 league games for the Timbers this season compared to 19 for the 28-year-old Pantemis.

Crepeau joined Portland in January 2024 on a two-year contract with a club option for 2026. The 12-year MLS veteran arrived with a 42-35-23 record across all competitions with LAFC (2022-2023), Vancouver Whitecaps (2019-2021) and Montreal (2013-2017).
