Two northwest Sask. men win $100K on EXTRA

For two northwest Saskatchewan men, life-changing news arrived in the most ordinary of moments – one while scanning a stack of tickets at a store counter, the other while watching a movie at home.

Russell Kendel of Lloydminster and Ed Toner of Rapid View are celebrating separate $100,000 lottery wins through the EXTRA draw, with each already planning how the unexpected windfall will shape their futures.

Kendel said he discovered his prize after bringing several lottery tickets into a Lloydminster retailer to check.

“I always use the self-checker,” he said. “When I got to the winning ticket, I was dumbfounded and had to keep scanning it.”

The December 5 EXTRA draw win came after Kendel matched the final six digits on a ticket purchased with a WESTERN MAX entry at the Co-op located at 6110A 49 Ave. in Lloydminster.

He said his first call was to his fiancée, who initially feared something was wrong.

“When I told her I won, she said, ‘You’re joking. This is not a funny joke,’” Kendel said.

Kendel plans to use the prize money to help buy a farm, something he described as a shared dream for he and his partner.

“That is my main focus,” he said. “It just [makes it easier] trying to buy our farm.”

Meanwhile, Toner’s winning moment unfolded at home when his wife checked their tickets using the Lotto Spot app after the January 16 EXTRA draw.

“I was downstairs watching a movie, and she ran downstairs and showed me the Lotto Spot app and said, ‘Read that. You won.’”

Toner said he jumped up after seeing the prize on screen, recalling that his wife encouraged him to celebrate with a happy dance.

The Rapid View resident said he has been playing the lottery for about 40 years and matched the last six digits to claim the prize. The ticket was purchased with a WESTERN MAX entry at the Mobil station located at 830 9 St. in Meadow Lake.

Toner said the timing of the win is especially meaningful as he looks ahead to retirement and family milestones.

“It will definitely help in my retirement,” he said. “And I want to give something to our two boys to help them — we are expected a new grandchild soon so it’s definitely exciting timing.”
