Sending her athletes off to Meadow Lake and Flying Dust First Nation for the 2026 Saskatchewan Winter Games brings back fond memories for figure skating coach Cindy Tymoruski.

“It’s pretty special because I’ve been teaching them since they were in helmets and now they’re at this level. So, it’s special for me to see that progress,” she said.

Josie Sadlowski, Keri Sevick, and Harley Whiting all participated in a qualifying competition at the beginning of December. Making the cut meant they would be sent to the Winter Games as part of the Rivers West District team.

Tymoruski said she expects the team to perform well, but that’s not the most important outcome for her athletes.

“Your personal best is what you strive for. If you can get enough marks to get close to first, second, third, or somewhere in the top half, that would be great; but personal best is the most important thing,” she said.

The skaters all share a mutual sense of excitement with the hope of taking in even the smallest aspects of the competition.

Sadlowski has been training with Skate Battlefords for the past eight years and said she enjoys the challenge of being involved in a single sport.

“It’s all up to me and what I do with my goals, it’s incredible to be a part of.”

“I skate eight hours a week, plus half an hour of stroking class and half an hour of off-ice. There’s a lot of hard work that goes into it, especially with all of the different factors,” she said.

Sevick has also been skating for eight years. She is a jumper who loves to perform double and axel jumps.

“A lot of patience goes into it, which I’m not great at, but I’ve learned to acquire it. It’s really frustrating to fall down, but I just take a second, breathe, and then keep trying,” she said.

Much like the other athletes, Whiting said she was filled with excitement when she found out she was going to the Saskatchewan Winter Games.

“I was shocked because there were so many good skaters from this region and in the competitions. I am really excited to meet new people, have fun with my friends, and try my best,” she said.

The skaters won’t be attending alone; alongside them will be support from their longtime coach, Tymoruski.

“We’re going to have a lot of fun,” she said. “It’ll be a great learning experience. So, I’m looking forward to that.”
