GREY CUP COMMUNITY TOUR

Rider pride on display as Grey Cup visits North Battleford

Green is the colour, football is the game.

That’s what fans sang as they stood in line; smiles drawn across their faces as they awaited a photo with the Grey Cup and Saskatchewan’s own, Logan Ferland.

North Battleford was the eighth stop on the Grey Cup Community Tour, where fans filled the Don Ross Center. Among the crowd of people, one fan stood out among the rest: Wazzy, a seasoned Rider fan who is often spotted wearing a green Spider-Man costume.

“I’ve been a Rider’s fan ever since I was a kid,” he said. “My dad got me into the game, and that’s pretty much why I do what I do today.”

Wazzy and his costumes have made it to many games at Mosiac Stadium over the years, but for him, seeing the Grey Cup in person was like a dream come true.

“I’m very excited to get a picture of the Grey Cup in my costume. I’m so glad the riders brought it home this year. It’s very exciting,” he added.

Jackie and her two sons, Arwin and Rogan were also a part of the crowd. They stared ahead with anticipation, patiently awaiting their turn.

“I’ve been a fan since I was born because my family are Rider fans. We even lived in B.C. and were still Rider fans and would go see them,” Jackie said.

Her sons, however, have only been watching football for the past two seasons.

“’And what’s exciting about this summer?” she prompted the young fans.

“I’m gonna go to the Roughriders game for the first time,” Rogan said with excitement.

The two boys agreed that their favourite part of watching the games is seeing the team win. They hope to see a touchdown at their first game in August.

Also, in the line were long time fans, some who refuse to miss a game much like Cheney; she has had season tickets since 2018.

“We actually got the opportunity to go to the Grey Cup where they won. It was super exciting; we had an absolute blast,” she said.

Cheney has already purchased her season tickets for the upcoming season.

“I’m looking forward to seeing how the team develops now that they have won the Grey Cup and looking forward to seeing the rest of the transactions with the team and how they’re going to move forward now,” she said.

However, some people in line weren’t fans at all. One wore blue, the colour of the Rider’s biggest rival, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

“I’m a Bomber fan through and through,” said Brenden. “It’s always neat to see the cup especially because the Bombers are on it a little more than Riders.”

Brenden brought along his brother-in-law, Ayden, who stood proudly in green.

“There’s a lot of hatred in the summer when the Riders are playing the Bombers, especially. We hate each other,” Brenden laughed.

Although he said he would never be a Riders fan, he did want them to win the Grey Cup game.

The next stop for the tour is Meadow Lake where Ferland and the cup will visit the 2026 Saskatchewan Winter Games.
