From helping a child’s heart surgery to supporting local hospital, Meadow Lake Broncos give back

When a young member of the Meadow Lake community needed heart surgery, the Broncos stepped in to help.

The senior hockey team raised money to support the family during a difficult time. It’s one of several ways the organization has quietly helped people in the northern Saskatchewan city over the years.

“We donate publicly… and we also donate quietly behind the scenes,” said Shelley Arnold, a coordinator of the Meadow Lake Senior Broncos organization.

In Meadow Lake, the team’s role in the community extends far beyond the ice.

Each hockey season, fans fill the local arena to watch the Broncos play, but the relationship between the team and the community runs both ways.

“Without our fans, we wouldn’t have a team,” Arnold said. “Your fans make your team.”

That sense of community support was on display again recently, when the team helped raise money for the Meadow Lake Hospital Foundation. During a recent home game, a 50/50 draw grew far larger than expected.

“The 50/50 went crazy… and we just topped it up to $10,000.”

The team ultimately donated the $10,000 to the Meadow Lake Hospital Foundation this past weekend, an organization that also helps support the Broncos throughout the season.

Foundation volunteers assist the team on game nights, helping with duties such as working the gate at the arena.

“And then we donate back to them because we appreciate their work helping us throughout our season.”

For Scott Campbell, chair of the foundation, the size of the donation came as a surprise.

“I was hoping we might get $5,000 or $6,000 and to get $10,000… an incredible outpouring of success for sure,” Campbell said.

The funds will support the foundation’s efforts to purchase equipment and resources for Meadow Lake Hospital.

“It’s just going to go into our buying power to buy more stuff for our hospital,” he said.

Campbell said the turnout highlights how closely connected the team remains to the community.

“To have a thousand people at the game and a $10,000 donation is pretty incredible for our little community,” he said.

In a town where hockey nights still bring neighbours together, the Broncos have grown into something more than a team.
