Catching up: Meadow Lake pride group continues to grow

“We let people know that it’s okay to be queer in a small town.”

Monique Brownrigg, secretary of Meadow Lake’s pride group, wants the community to know who they are and what they’re about.

Over the past few months, the group has grown steadily and now includes over 30 members. It brings together not only individuals from the 2SLGBTQ+ community, but also friends, family, and allies who support them.  

“I think as our group expands and we’re doing more events and stuff, we definitely meet more people. I think it’s really important that we’re here, and we have visibility,” Brownrigg said.  

So far this year, the group has hosted a Cozy Mic Night where people in the community perform music and poetry, and a journal-making event.

“Honestly, we have had really good turnouts. Our last few nights, we’ve had a lot of people just cramming into a building, so that’s been awesome,” they said.

The group’s next event is their annual Trivia Night on May 2.  

“It goes on for a couple hours. We have trivia with teams of four to five people. We have a few prizes that we usually get donated from local businesses that support us.”

The funding from this night and memberships goes directly back to the group to help fund future community outings and their big Pride in the Park event in June.  

“Trivia Night is really the only event where there is a cost to register. Everything else is free throughout the year; this just helps us to keep going. We need money for renting out the venues, and if we want to do crafting things, then we need the money for that as well.” 

Brownrigg believes the pride group helps bring people in the community together and gives members a sense of belonging.  

“I think it’s super important because even myself, I grew up here and small towns get a very bad rep for not accepting queer people. It’s just so nice to be around like-minded people that are going to accept you no matter what.” 

In the coming months, members can also look forward to a local drag show and the annual camp out hosted by Meadow Lake Pride.
