Meadow Lake steps in to issue marriage licences after longtime provider closes

Planning a wedding in Meadow Lake just got a little easier.

The City of Meadow Lake is now issuing marriage licences after the closure of a longtime private provider that had handled the service locally.

“While marriage licences have been available in Meadow Lake for many years through private vendors, this is the first time the City of Meadow Lake has taken on the role of issuer directly,” said Angie Benz, the city’s corporate services manager.

“The decision was prompted by the recent closure of Jewelry Classique, which had served as the local issuer for a long time.”

Without a local issuer, residents would have had to travel to other communities such as St. Walburg, Goodsoil or North Battleford to obtain a licence.

“To ensure there was no gap in service for residents planning their weddings, the City stepped in to fill that role,” Benz said.

By offering the service at city hall, she said couples can now complete the legal requirements for marriage without leaving the community.

The service officially launched April 8 and has already seen early demand.

“We’ve already seen a steady stream of inquiries and even issued a couple licences, which confirms how important it was to keep this service accessible within the community,” she said.

The process requires both parties to attend in person with two pieces of government-issued identification, including one photo ID. Those previously married must also provide original or court-certified divorce documents.

Couples complete and sign a statutory declaration at city hall, and appointments are recommended to ensure availability.

Licences are valid for 90 days and become effective 24 hours after purchase, meaning couples are encouraged to apply a few days before their ceremony.

The $60 fee is set by the provincial government under The Marriage Regulations.

Benz said the city’s role is limited to issuing licences and will not expand into hosting civil ceremonies.

“Our goal is simply to ensure that the required legal paperwork remains accessible to local couples following the closure of the previous private issuer,” she said.
