Typhoon, Northern round out Rock League semis alongside Alpine and Shield

TORONTO — Typhoon Curling Club needed to score just seven points combined across its pair of mixed-fours games against Northern United and got the job done Saturday night.

The two will meet again in one of two semifinal games on Sunday in the Rock League. Alpine Curling Club and Shield Curling Club will meet in the other, having also qualified Saturday.

The final is set for late Sunday afternoon at Toronto’s Mattamy Athletic Centre.

Typhoon’s Anna Hasselborg scored a deuce in the fifth end to take a 5-2 edge, leaving it to Niklas Edin to secure the playoff berth. Edin, trailing 2-1 at the time on the other sheet, scored one more in a 5-2 loss, doing just enough to get Typhoon into the semifinals.

Alpine advanced after splitting a pair of mixed-fours matches with the Frontier Curling Club earlier in the day.

Alpine improved to 4.5 points when their team skipped by Alina Paetz earned a 6-5 over Frontier’s Danny Casper.

Frontier’s Grant Hardie beat Alpine’s Joel Retornaz 6-5 to give Frontier three points. But with just 90 points scored throughout the event, the American-based club was unable to pass the Typhoon and Maple United for a spot in the top four.

Maple won both their games against Shield to keep their hopes of advancing alive. Shield clinched a semifinal berth when Alpine eliminated Frontier.

Alpine finished the day atop the standings, holding a tiebreaker on points over Northern (4.5 points). Typhoon (four points) and Shield (3.5 points) rounded out the top four, with Maple and Frontier both having three points.

The competition offers US$250,000 in prize money, with $100,000 going to the winning team.
