Meadow Lake goalie shines as La Crete captures provincial title

An unreal moment.

That’s how Meadow Lake’s Ethan Fechter described the final seconds of the gold medal game at the Junior B Hockey Provincials in Lloydminster.

It’s a moment that felt even more significant considering the journey that brought him there.

Near the end of November, the 20-year-old goaltender was traded to the La Crete Lumber Barons, located in a small hamlet in northern Alberta. His start with the team was slowed by a string of injuries, but by playoff time, Fechter was healthy and ready to return between the pipes.

“We swept the first round of playoffs. Second round, we won in five. We swept in the finals and all the games were pretty easy; we didn’t truly struggle. After that, we had a nice little two-week break until we had to go to the provincials,” he said.

That momentum carried into the provincial tournament, where the Lumber Barons cruised through the round robin with four straight wins, including a shutout performance from Fechter in game three.

Heading into the final period of the gold medal game, La Crete held a 5-2 lead over the Medicine Hat Cubs, but Fechter knew the game wasn’t over yet.

“I told all the defencemen that they’re going to be desperate, to watch for breakaways. We just had to stay calm; just 20 more minutes, anything could happen.”

The team was able to hold on to their lead and score two more points in the fourth period, bringing them to secure a 7-2 victory.

“With 10 second left, the whole bench cleared and we all threw our gloves and our helmets and all celebrated together. I think we’re on the ice for over an hour, just taking photos and just being in the moment,” he recalled.

Fechter said he couldn’t have asked for a better group to share the moment with.

“This was probably the best team I’ve been on, a very tight group. Our offence was so good and my defence this year was stellar. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of guys to be with.”

He finished the season with 16 wins and 2 losses overall, where he stopped 92.4 per cent of all shots faced. Moving forward, he hopes to play on a team in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA).

“I do have multiple offers from ACHA Division 2 teams. I’ve been talking to a lot of teams looking over their programs and the biggest thing though is the cost, it’s quite expensive to go to states for schooling.”

For now, he’s focused on enjoying the championship moment with his team.
