Canada opens world mixed doubles curling tournament on victorious note

GENEVA — Canada’s Colton and Kadriana Lott opened the world mixed doubles curling championship on a victorious note Saturday.

The Canadian squad scored three in the first end en route to a 6-4 victory over South Korea in the first game of the tournament for both teams.

“Usually, a big event like this, you’re nervous to start and nervous to see what the ice is going to do and feel like,” Kadriana Lott said. “It was good to have a strong start.

“We do notice there are areas that we’re going to work on, but now we feel more comfortable knowing what the ice is doing going into (Sunday).”

South Korea scored twice in the fifth to pull to within 5-3. But Kadriana Lott responded with a heavy hit to score a single and put Canada ahead 6-3.

“Kadriana’s shot in six was a very hard score,” Colton Lott said. “To even get one point and not give up a steal was hard to do.

“We were not even half an inch from giving up a steal. She hit right where we needed to, and that just kept the ball rolling and didn’t give them the momentum.”

The Lotts are among the most decorated mixed doubles curling teams in Canada. The couple from Gimli, Man., has won two gold, two silver and a bronze at the Canadian mixed doubles championships since 2019.

Now their sights are set on earning Canada its first world mixed doubles championship. The Canadians resume tournament action Sunday, facing Finland and the United States.
