A $25,000 donation from the Meadow Lake Lions Club has moved a local campaign, for an accessible bus, one step closer to the finish line.

Lions Club member Lloyd Elash said the donation was made after members learned of the NorthWest Community Lodge’s need for a new accessible bus.

“It’s always been our goal to give back to the community and to the area.”

The donation was funded through proceeds from the club’s annual Bunnock tournament and other fundraising efforts, including its cash bingo events.

NorthWest Community Lodge in Meadow Lake is a 72‑bed long‑term care home operated by the Saskatchewan Health Authority, offering 24‑hour nursing and therapy services.

“Your support brings us one step closer to providing safe, reliable, and accessible transportation for our residents. We are truly grateful for your commitment to making a difference in our community,” the public health agency stated in a social media post Thursday.

The accessible bus campaign is not the only major community project the club has supported recently.

Elash said the organization also contributed $40,000 toward seating improvements at the Moeller Hometown Arena inside the Co-op Centre.

The latest donation comes as the Lions Club prepares to host its 4th annual Bunnock tournament this Saturday at the Lions Park.

Elash said community sponsorship has again been strong, although participation is slightly lower than in previous years, with 33 teams registered.

Despite thunderstorms being forecasted this weekend, the tournament will proceed regardless of the weather.

“We play rain or shine,” he said.

While the club has not yet identified its next major fundraising project, Elash said members remain focused on supporting community needs as they arise.
