Sandy Bay residents clean up after sudden storm damages homes, knocks out power
Residents of Sandy Bay were cleaning up Friday after a sudden and violent storm tore through the northern community, damaging roofs, fences and power lines while leaving crews scrambling to meet immediate needs.
Tim Underwood, a member of chief and council for Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN) who represents Sandy Bay, said the community was hit at about 8 p.m. Thursday by what he described as an intense burst of wind.
“When we pulled into the community, it was just like a war zone,” Underwood said. “There was debris all over the roads. There was debris on the transmission lines.”
Underwood was out on the adjacent lake in a boat, fishing, when he noticed the weather shifting and said they just made it to shore when the storm hit.
