Denare Beach residents share words of advice for Summerland wildfire evacuees
Residents of Denare Beach have some words of wisdom for those who have been impacted by the wildfire which swept through Summerland, B.C., over the weekend.
The Bald Range fire burning in the Okanagan has forced 20,000 British Columbians from their homes and has created one of the largest evacuation operations in that province in recent years.
All residents of Summerland, a city with a population of 12,000, about 50 kilometres south of Kelowna, were evacuated on Aug. 8 as a fast-moving wildfire raced towards the community. While it has not yet been announced how many homes and businesses were lost, eyewitness accounts and video have shown the destruction of the city is widespread.
“This just brings everything back, and my heart goes out to these people because they are in for a tough time,” said Rhonda Werbicki, who lost her home of 26 years from a wildfire in Denare Beach in June 2025.
