Acquittals overturned, new trial ordered in 155-kilogram drug seizure near Maidstone
The Saskatchewan Court of Appeal has ordered a new trial for two men acquitted after police found 155 kilograms of methamphetamine and cocaine in a vehicle near Maidstone, ruling the RCMP had lawful grounds to arrest them.
Police found packages containing 90 kilograms of methamphetamine and 65 kilograms of cocaine in the back seat and trunk of the vehicle during a June 1, 2023, traffic stop on Highway 16.
Parminder Singh and Sahilpreet Singh Grewal were each charged with possessing controlled substances for the purpose of trafficking.
At their original trial, a Court of King’s Bench judge excluded the drugs after finding the arrests violated the men’s protection against arbitrary detention and left the subsequent vehicle search without lawful authority. Without the seized evidence, the Crown conceded it could not prove its case and both men were acquitted.
