Meota Central was completed in the second quarter of 2026, ahead of schedule and under budget. Steam injection began in June.

The facility uses steam-assisted gravity drainage to recover heavy oil from underground.

The process involves two horizontal wells, one above the other. Steam injected into the upper well heats the thick oil, allowing it to flow into the lower well, where it is pumped to the surface.

Water for the steam comes from the North Saskatchewan River through an underground pipeline. Oil is trucked to terminals for shipment to market.

The July presentation identifies another Meota Central expansion planned for late 2029, along with further development at Plover Lake and new facilities at Glenbogie.

Strathcona said the planned Plover Lake expansion would roughly double the plant’s steam capacity and support production of about 20,000 barrels a day.

The company saidd its broader growth plans would also support provincial revenues and public services.

“Planned growth matters for Strathcona, but it also matters beyond our company. It supports jobs. It supports local businesses. It supports municipal tax bases, provincial revenues and the public services that communities rely on,” the company stated. 

“It supports the energy industry ecosystem that has been built in Saskatchewan over decades—an ecosystem of operators, service providers, tradespeople, engineers, technologists, landowners, Indigenous and local businesses, and community leaders.”
