Oct 27, 2016 | 12:00 PM

Results are in and the Rural Municipality of Meadow Lake has a new reeve.

Tim McKay defeated incumbent Roger Zuchotzki with 296 votes to Zuchotzki’s 159.

“It feels good, it’s going to be an interesting beginning. I know there’s people there who have a lot of years on council who will ensure things are run right,” McKay said.

During the campaign period, McKay said if elected he wants to improve communication between the R.M. staff, council, and ratepayers.

“I’ll talk with council and the administrator, and figure out a strategy. Until a person gets into the position and sees what options are available, it’s tough to comment on exactly what I’ll do,” he said.

Running for councillor in Division 5 was Blair Mysko, Russ Klassen and Kohlby Sheppard. Mysko was elected with 74 votes to Klassen’s 25 and Sheppard’s 10.

Returning officer Gina Bernier noted that roughly a dozen more people cast ballots in this election compared to the last one in 2013.

Elsewhere, the Northwest School Division (NWSD) also held its elections with a few new faces voted in as board trustee.

Out of 454 people who cast ballots for Division 10 in the NWSD, incumbent Barb Seymour and newcomer Glen Winkler were elected with 228 and 226 votes, respectively. In Division 11, Jessica Piche was re-elected with 29 votes compared to Patrick Derocher’s 25.

Division 7 saw Andrea Perillat elected over Victor Hult by a large margin of 159 to 20.

Faith Graham, Division 8 incumbent was re-elected with 139 votes over Tamara Smith with 131.

Division 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 candidates were acclaimed. Serving for the next four years is Mark Campbell, Terri Prete, Brian Gaboury, Janice Baillargeon and John Anderson, respectively.

Left without a candidate, Division 4 is expected to hold a bye-election sometime in the next year.
