M.L. Broncos and Waterhen Lake team up for successful fundraiser

It might not have been quite the response organizers were looking for, but the charity hockey game on Waterhen Lake First Nation was deemed a success.

The Nov. 24 game, played between Waterhen Lake band members and the Meadow Lake Broncos senior hockey team, wasn’t a close match as the Broncs walked away with a 15-6 win. However, scoring and winning wasn’t really the point.

“This event was to entertain our band members in some good hockey action,” organizer April Mistickokat said.  “Thanks to all the players who came and [the Broncos] for accepting the challenge.”

Instead of charging a fee, fans who wished to watch the game brought a non-perishable food item. By the end of the night, four boxes of food were collected which will be donated to the Waterhen Lake Food Bank.

Donations were also accepted for Standing Rock. Mistickokat said she’s optimistic she’ll collect more donations before she heads to North Dakota in mid-December.

For the Broncos, the game didn’t count towards the regular season. The team shifts back to league action with their next game tomorrow, Nov. 26 at 8 p.m. in Sandy Lake when the boys take on the Whitefish Flyers.
