Food bank gets boost from Sask. Rush

Dec 20, 2016 | 11:00 AM

Saskatoon’s Food Bank and Learning Centre is about to receive a huge boost thanks to the Saskatchewan Rush professional lacrosse team.

During the Rush’s Dec. 16 Christmas showcase pre-season game, players wore ‘ugly Christmas jerseys’ which were auctioned off through Facebook after the game.

The team’s manager of partnerships and events, Samantha Erhardt, said everyone seemed to love the jerseys

“I know a lot of the players wanted to keep theirs and the fans really embraced them as well,” Erhardt said.

Still working on the final numbers, Erhardt added the donation number will be announced either Tuesday, Dec. 20 or Wednesday, Dec. 21.

Each of the game-worn jerseys sold for between $200 and $500 each. For every replica jersey sold and most special edition T-shirts, $10 was donated.

“The donation from the game total are going to the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre,” Erhardt added.

Prior to the game, fans were encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item for the food bank, something they embraced as oil barrels full of food were collected.

The jersey auction was the first of the 2017 season for the Rush. Erhardt said two more are planned for the season but the themes are being kept confidential at this time.

The Saskatchewan Rush open the season on the road on Jan. 7 in Atlanta when they take on the Georgia Swarm. The home opener and 2016 championship banner raising is set for Jan. 21 at the SaskTel Centre.
