Today the provincial and federal governments announced funding for a new wastewater treatment facility in the Rural Municipality of Frenchman Butte.

A media release distributed on Jan. 31 explained the lagoon will be constructed at a centralized site which will better serve residents in the municipality, along with the Village of Paradise Hill and Town of St. Walburg.

“The Government of Canada is committed to investing in modern infrastructure that meets the needs of our communities, supports the middle class, and ensures that Canada remains the best place in the world to live, work and raise a family,” Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, said.

According to the release, the new infrastructure will improve the reliability and performance of wastewater collection and treatment in the area. The statement said the build will protect the local environment, while also accommodating future population growth to double the current system’s capacity.

The governments of Canada and Saskatchewan are each contributing roughly $4.2 million towards the $12.5 million project. The R.M. of Frenchman Butte will be responsible for all remaining costs of the project, which is also being shared by the Village of Paradise Hill and the Town of St. Walburg.

On behalf of municipal project partners, R.M. of Frenchman Butte Reeve Bonnie Mills Midgley thanked the governments for the funding announcement.

“The partnership of the R.M. of Frenchman Butte, the Town of St Walburg and the Village of Paradise Hill looks forward to the construction of a regional aerated lagoon, and related facilities, that will serve our municipalities’ wastewater treatment needs in an environmentally-sustainable manner for many years,” she said.
