SIGA’s Justice Paul Favel Indigenous Award for Outstanding Leadership in Community Involvement

The Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority is pleased to offer this scholarship award of $5,000, which will be presented to an Indigenous student in a full-time academic program, who is studying at the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies, First Nations University of Canada, University of Saskatchewan, University of Regina, Saskatchewan Polytechnic, or Gabriel Dumont Institute.

The award will honour a student who has shown tremendous commitment to Indigenous culture, their community and their own education. The chosen student will exemplify the qualities that Justice Favel has demonstrated over his career, including a commitment to Indigenous activism and to representing the spirit of Indigenous people.

Judge Favel has served as Deputy Chief Commissioner with the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission since 2011 and as a member of the Oversight Committee on the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement since 2010.

Justice Paul Favel is a member of the Poundmaker Cree Nation and former partner at McKercher LLP in Saskatoon. He was appointed by the Canadian Department of Justice and began his role as a federal court judge on December 11, 2017.

Official mid-term academic transcripts
500-word essay on how you exhibit the qualities outlined in the award description (commitment to Indigenous culture, your community, your education, Indigenous activism) in .pdf or .doc format
At least one letter of reference with contact information (examples would be employment, academic or volunteer reference letters – no personal reference letters)

Eligibility Criteria

Member of a recognized Saskatchewan First Nations, Inuit, or Métis band or community
Enrolled in a full-time program at a Saskatchewan post-secondary institute such as: Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies, First Nations University of Canada, University of Saskatchewan, the University of Regina, Saskatchewan Polytechnic, or Gabriel Dumont Institute
Not an employee of Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority
