Communiplex re-opening to coincide with Hockey Day

Jan 20, 2017 | 4:00 PM

In conjunction with the Hockey Day in St. Walburg tomorrow, a ribbon cutting ceremony will celebrate the re-opening of the town’s communiplex.

The roughly $1 million project consisted of replacing the roof and repairs to the interior which administrator Shiloh Bronken said was a result of ice damming last spring. He said the ice affected spots in the arena, curling rink, and bowling alley.

“We’re really looking forward to seeing if it will reduce some of our utility costs,” she said. “Because we increased the insulation value in the roof, we’re looking forward to seeing some decreased expenses which could potentially be reflected further down the line.”

Along with the roof repairs came modern wheelchair accessible entrance.

During the ribbon cutting ceremony, scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 21, a representative from Meadow Lake MLA Jeremy Harrison’s office will make a small speech as will local municipal government officials.

Following the ribbon cutting, a complimentary beef-on-a-bun snack will be offered.

Bronken added she’s expecting to see a few hundred people between players, families, residents and fans for the hockey action.

Games for Hockey Day in St. Walburg start at 10 a.m. with the initiation team taking the ice. Following will be the novices, then the atom team.

The peewee team will play two games during the day. They will first play a league game in the early afternoon then a provincial game, the first of the series, versus Biggar at 6:30 p.m.

The bantam and senior teams are also playing during the annual event.

Wrapping up the night, the senior Eagles play at 9 p.m.
