Local woman organizing rally for snowmobilers’ stop in Meadow Lake

Feb 22, 2018 | 11:00 AM

When local snowmobile enthusiast Gerri Moeller heard a group of riders were making their way from Michigan to Alaska to raise money for diabetes, she felt compelled to get involved. Now, she’s busy trying to garner local support for the cause.

After reading a meadowlakeNOW story about the MichCanSka snowmobile riders’ 6500-kilometre trek, Moeller said she immediately got on the phone to see how she could help. Moeller said she plans to meet the riders in Big River Feb. 26, along with her husband and two friends, and they’re encouraging the public to meet the whole group in Meadow Lake around 5 p.m.

“I would love people to come out and meet the fellows and maybe make a donation to them for their cause,” she said. “Hopefully we can get people out and give them a nice warm welcome, as we know Meadow Lake can.”

Moeller said she wanted to get involved because snowmobiling and raising funds for diabetes are two of her passions. Her mother had Type 1 diabetes, she said, and passed away from the condition.

“I know how severe diabetes can get,” she said. “I always had a similar idea in the back of my mind, so when this came up I went straight to their webpage and started reading up on them, and I had goosebumps from head to toe.”

To help encourage local support, Moeller said she’s been busy on social media promoting the ride and sharing their stories.

“Hopefully people will come on down and support them,” she said. “It’s a pretty awesome thing these guys are doing. I’m excited to be a part of it, even if it’s just a little part of it.”

The donations collected during the ride will be distributed between the American Diabetes Association, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Diabetes Canada, and the riders are paying for their own expenses along the way so all the funds raised go directly to these causes.
