Pierceland man appears in court for gunfire, sexual assault and break-in charges

Jul 19, 2018 | 5:00 PM

A 41-year-old who is facing serious charges after a string of incidents earlier this week in Pierceland made his first court appearance in Meadow Lake this afternoon.

William Angus, a resident of the area, is accused of breaking and entering, committing sexual assault with a firearm, sexual interference, assault with a weapon, using a firearm in the commission of an offence, recklessly discharging a firearm, pointing a firearm, possession of a firearm for a dangerous purpose, mischief, and driving while disqualified.

Angus is currently in custody, and appeared in person in court today, with defence lawyer Owen Griffiths acting as duty counsel. Angus is not permitted to have any contact with two different complainants in the case, whose names are currently protected by a publication ban, and Crown prosecutor Andrew Clements agreed with these terms.

Griffiths asked that the case be adjourned until Aug. 13, to give Angus time to secure the representation of a Pierceland-area lawyer. He will be remanded to Prince Albert Correctional Centre until that date, and will appear by CCTV.

The charges came after RCMP were called to a Pierceland home Monday afternoon shortly before 4 p.m. An investigation determined an armed adult male suspect had fled the scene in a pickup truck before police arrived, discharging the firearm several times at several points while trying to escape.

Officers from the Pierceland, Meadow Lake, Loon Lake, and Cold Lake RCMP also helped search the area, along with help from a local pilot and members of the provincial Protection and Response Team. Angus was located and taken into custody without further incident and a firearm was also located and seized.

Angus is presumed innocent at this stage.
