MANY QUESTIONS, FEW ANSWERS IN TORONTO SHOOTING

Police are searching an east-end Toronto apartment to try to uncover why a 29-year-old man went on a shooting spree along Toronto’s Danforth Avenue on Sunday evening. Faisal Hussain killed Reese Fallon, an 18-year-old woman who aspired to be a nurse, and a 10-year-old girl, whose family has asked that her name not be released. Another 13 people were wounded. Ontario’s police watchdog has said Hussain died after a exchange of gunfire with police, but it was unclear if he was shot by police or took his own life.

MAKESHIFT MEMORIALS TAKE ROOT AT TORONTO SHOOTING SITES

Residents returned to Toronto’s Danforth Avenue a night after a deadly shooting spree to place candles, flowers and messages of support at various makeshift memorials. Words of sympathy and support have been spray-painted on planks of plywood while phrases such as “Greek town strong” and “we will not be afraid” have been written in chalk around a fountain. Mayor John Tory visited the neighbourhood Monday evening and joined residents for a prayer service in a church near the scene of the shootings.

POLICE NAME SUSPECT IN PARLIAMENT HILL INCIDENT

A 24-year-old man is scheduled to appear in court today following his arrest on Monday morning in connection with an incident during the traditional Changing of the Guard ceremony on Parliament Hill. Jesse Mooney of Ottawa is charged with assault and breach of probation. Video posted online shows several Mounties and protective service officers subduing someone on Parliament’s east lawn. First reports indicated a knife may have been involved, but authorities later said a small pocket knife was found near the subject following the arrest.

B.C. WILDFIRE SERVICE BRACES FOR LIGHTNING, WIND

Wildfire conditions are calmer across British Columbia, but there is concern climbing temperatures and gusty winds could wipe out the progress made over the last several days. Environment Canada is calling for winds gusting to 50 kilometres per hour over the Kelowna area and lightning is also forecast for several parts of the province, including the Okanagan Valley. The largest fire, between Peachland and Summerland, has grown to nearly 18 square kilometres and remains out of control.
