Video animator from M.L. using skills to tell Northern Sask. stories

From Meadow Lake to Vancity, Daniel Beaulieu is using his skills as an animator to tell the stories of Northern Saskatchewan communities via web series.

Upon graduating from the University of Regina’s film school, Beaulieu worked on sets like Corner Gas, and Little Mosque on the Prairie before moving to Vancouver to chase his passion for animation.

Through an emerging content competition sponsored by Telus,  the animator pitched a web-series based on northern communities adapting to urban life. Telus producers enjoyed the pitch and awarded Beaulieu $10,000 to create a pilot episode.

“The stories of small towns in northern Saskatchewan are important stories which should be told but I don’t feel there’s enough opportunity to tell them. I’m really glad I have the ability and opportunity here,” he said.

The series is mostly based on Beaulieu’s time in Meadow Lake and Hudson Bay.

“One of the main plot points is, the main economic winch pin of this town is an OSB Mill. One of the main characters works at this mill and because of the changing economy the mill closes and at that point the town comes to a crossroads on how to continue as a community,” Beaulieu said.

While Beaulieu’s characters aren’t based off family and friends, he said there are certainly aspects of them, and himself included.

“One of the characters has a twin sister and I have a twin sister. There’s three main characters, they don’t meet that often but show different sides of the town and each has different aspects of myself,” he said. “There’s more situations than characters which are more influenced by my friends, family or myself in the story.”

Winners are expected to be announced sometime next week. Whether he receives the grant or not, Beaulieu said the project will continue, whether through other funders, as a side project, or even a full-time job.

The competition is currently at the stage where two videos are chosen and awarded $50,000 to create five more series episodes. Today, Aug. 12 is the final day for the public to vote on their favourite content.
