North West College Graduation – Northern Campus

Graduation 2016
North West College will be hosting two central ceremonies for graduates of university programs, skills credit programs and Basic Education Adult 12. The central graduations will bring together all rural site and campus students. These large celebrations are intended to replace the location specific closing ceremonies held in past years. They will each prove to be exciting events with live music, keynote speakers and over $10,000 in awards being presented at each ceremony.

Joseph L. Handley Announced as Keynote Speaker for Inaugural Graduation – North Region

North West College is very pleased to announce that Joe Handley, former premier of the Northwest Territories will be presenting the keynote address at the inaugural Northern Graduation this June. 
Handley was born and raised in Meadow Lake, SK.

Among his many distinctions, Handley is celebrated as the first Aboriginal graduate of the Masters Program in Indian and Northern Education from the University of Saskatchewan. After graduation, Handley served as a school division director in Manitoba and a university professor with the University of British Columbia and the University of Manitoba. In 1985, Handley move to the Northwest Territories to assume the post of Deputy Minister of Education.

In 1999 he ran to represent the territorial electoral district of Weledeh and won handily. During his first term in office, Handley became Minister of Finance, Chair of the Financial Management Board, Minister of Transportation and Minister Responsible for the Northwest Territories Power Corporation. He won his second term by acclamation and ran unopposed for the role of Premier in 2003. 

After a term of notable accomplishments Handley retired from territorial politics in 2007. Having devoted his career to educational excellence, public service and aboriginal rights, Joseph Handley is a testimony to the inspirational leaders cultivated in our region.

We are thrilled to welcome him home to give the inaugural address at Flying Dust!

Students must arrive by 1:00 p.m. to participate in the graduation. Late arrivals will be directed to sit in audience. NO EXCEPTIONS

Guests
All are welcome to the graduation ceremony. This is an open community event and no tickets, or admission fee, will be collected. Please invite your family and friends to come celebrate your accomplishments. Graduands or guests with special needs who require accommodations or special arrangements, please alert your Program Coordinator when confirming your attendance.

Gowns, Stoles, Grad Caps & Tassels
Students participating in graduation will be provided a complete graduation gown, stole, grad cap and tassel to wear on the day of graduation free of charge. Be sure to arrive no later than 1:00 p.m. to be fitted for a gown prior to the time of the assembly. The graduation cap and tassel will be yours to keep as a gift from North West College. The graduation gowns and stoles must be returned to the gown fitting room no later than 4:30 p.m. on the day of graduation.

What Should I Wear?
This is a formal event. Out of respect for your fellow graduates please wear dark colored trousers, dresses or other appropriate attire. It can be warm, so wear light fabric.

Photography
On the day of the graduation, photography stations will be set-up for students and their guests to capture the moment after they cross the stage. Want to capture the moment on stage? Feel free to grab your camera and find a spot down the centre aisle to take the photo at the right moment. Please be mindful of the center aisle as others who will be looking to capture the moment of their graduate. Worried about getting the best seat? Unsure if you’ll be able to see the ceremony? A professional videographer will be on hand to film the event and project it onto two big screens making every spot the best seat in the house.

Personal Belongings
Please leave all personal items such as jackets or purses with a family or friends in the audience. A room will be available for graduands to be fitted prior to the ceremony but, due to the volume of traffic, the room cannot be secured. The College will not be held responsible for any items removed or lost in the room during the graduation ceremony.
