Freezing rain hits Yellowhead region

Freezing rain that moved through the Yellowhead region Thursday night left some very icy conditions for commuters.

As of 6 a.m. Friday there was still a freezing rain warning in effect for the Battlefords region.

“Lloydminster’s changed over to snow now, so we’d expect a similar transition to snow in the Battlefords probably around 7 or 8 o’clock,” said Mark Melsness with Environment Canada. As much as 5 cm of snow was expected.

“Maybe consider postponing your travel plans until a little bit later,” Melsness added.

The Highway Hotline was not recommending travel anywhere in the Battlefords, Biggar, or Lloydminster areas, in the wake of the freezing rain. In North Battleford, city streets, sidewalks, and parking lots were very slippery early Friday morning.
