Sox clinch playoff spot after win against the North Battleford Beavers

The Meadow Lake Sr. White Sox will be heading into the playoffs.

The team won 5-3 against the North Battleford Beavers in a wildcard game on July 4 to clinch their playoff spot in North Saskatchewan River Baseball League (NSRBL). By the end of the third inning, the Sox had an early lead 4-2 against the Beavers.

In the sixth inning, the Beavers were behind and tried to stay alive with a gamble. The Beavers decided to walk one of the Sox players to load the bases. The gamble worked and kept the team alive for one more inning but they weren’t able to get any runs and lost.

First baseman Owen Dancy said the Sox had a good defensive game and they were fired up before the game started.

“I don’t think we made an error,” Dancy said. “I thought we did good on that and our defence was pretty solid. Our bats were alive tonight. We haven’t had that in a long time so it was nice to see all the guys throughout the lineup were swinging bats and making good contact.”

The Sox won’t know who they play in playoffs until next week but Dancy thinks they will be facing one of the top teams in the league in the first round.

“We’re probably going to see the top one or two teams in the league,” Dancy said. “They’ve been good for years and we’ve hung in there for a few innings but it’s tough getting later in the game. They’ve got a solid group of guys that we’re probably going to be facing. It’s going to be tough but I think if we stick with it we can do some damage.”

The first round of the NSRBL playoffs start on July 8 and runs until July 15. The finals will be from July 29 to Aug. 5.
