Meadow Lake residents saw a modest hike in taxes this year but it wasn’t as much as other cities in Saskatchewan.

City council received a report from the city of Prince Albert on a comparison of the 2019 cities tax increase percentages at the council meeting on July 22.

Meadow Lake had the fourth lowest tax increase of 2.4 per cent for 2019. Saskatoon had the highest tax increase of 4.4 per cent and Estevan had no increase set for this year.

“Council was pleased to see that we were able to be closer to that lower end of percentage increases that happened this year around the province,” acting city manager Jessica Walters said.

The tax rate was set to match the inflation rate during last year’s budget meeting in November.

“Tax increases are a fact of life no matter where you live, unfortunately,” Walters said. “Our council is trying their best to minimize the impact to residents as much as possible while still maintaining service levels.”

Tax notices were mailed out in late May and early June with the payment deadline on July 31.
