Growing M.L. volleyball camp reinforces fundamentals and teamwork

A volleyball camp in Meadow Lake is underway this week and will provide a tune-up for student athletes before the school year begins.

The Meadow Lake Volleyball Camp opened for registration this morning at Carpenter High School.

Cheyne Dallyn, camp coordinator, said 80 to 100 kids from Grades 4 to 12 are taking part in the camp this year.

“I know this is a highlight for a lot of kids summer. They enjoy it and it grows every year. We always get different faces every year which is nice. We can see that the game of volleyball is alive and well in the city of Meadow Lake and the surrounding area,” Dallyn said.

The camp is split into three separate age groups. Kids in Grades 4 to 6 get an introduction to volleyball and learn basic skills for the game through different drills and practice games.

“We’re looking at basic fundamental skills and getting them to start to understand the game,” Dallyn said.

Most kids in Grades 7 to 12 are already a part of their school volleyball team so the camp acts as a more of a pre-season training camp. The camp offers the athletes with an opportunity to learn new skills while also sharpening their fundamentals.

“These guys (grades 7-9) are starting to learn and understand concepts of the game like how to move as a team, how to move your feet and stuff like that. And at the senior level it’s even more advanced skills and tweaking all the positional stuff to get them to work as a team,” Dallyn said.

Dallyn has been a part of the camp for the past six years and said the most important skill the athletes will learn at the camp is how to pass the ball.

“Passing is one of the most fundamental parts of the game and the most important part of the game. If you can pass a ball, if you can work as a team, then it makes everything really easy,” Dallyn said.

The Meadow Lake Volleyball Camp runs from Aug. 12 to 14 for children in Grades 4 to 6 and Aug. 12 to 15 for children in Grades 7 to 12.
