RCMP reflect on 2019 highlights and challenges

As 2019 draws to a close, Meadow Lake RCMP is taking a look back on the most important and impactful cases and developments of the year.

Cpl. Rob King told meadowlakeNOW local police appreciated working closely with Flying Dust First Nation, in ensuring success and safety throughout the Indigenous summer games in July.

“The development of a RCMP force house on the First Nation with a member living on the reserve is one of the detachment highlights,” he said.

King noted the force house is still in development.

King added local police worked closely with Carpenter High School in the creation and painting of the mural on the wall of the detachment gym.

“The Meadow Lake detachment summer Golf Tournament Fundraiser raised $4,462.25. The money raised went to Salvation Army and Multiworks,” King said.

Staff Sgt. Tim Sartison added the Annual Christmas Empty Stocking Fundraiser this year was held on Dec. 18. Last year’s Christmas Tree Fundraiser raised $4,243.55. That money went to the Salvation Army.

The Community photo contest was also a success for the local detachment. The winning photos were used on privacy screens put up in the windows at the detachment.

Local RCMP finalized setting up Meadow Lake’s traffic services unit which is officially fully staffed.

Officers also recognized an improved and better working relationship with provincial response team including conservation officers and highway traffic control. Other success in working with crime reduction team to help suppress criminal and drug activity in Meadow Lake and surrounding area.

RCMP still face challenges with the presence of drugs and drug related offences within the local community. The RCMP said they’re countering additional challenges with the recent increase in firearm related offences.
